You can use the WhatsApp website for a web-based experience, or if you don't like the sound of that, you can use a separate chat client instead. There are two principle ways that you can access your WhatsApp account from your Mac. While the vast majority of these messages will have been exchanged over smartphones, it is possible to use WhatsApp on a Mac. In 2018, the service said it was host to 64 billion encrypted messages on its most successful day. If you consider that it had 1.5 billion users in 2018 and 1 billion in 2016, then the number of active WhatsApp accounts has been increasing at half a billion every two years. At the last count in 2020, the Facebook-owned service had more than 2 billion WhatsApp users around the globe and rising. There is no reason that WhatsApp cannot do the same, without compromising on security.Despite strong competition from the likes of Telegram and Signal, WhatsApp remains the most popular messaging platform by a mile. Telegram, a messaging service similar to WhatsApp, already has an iPad app which works independently of its smartphone apps.
Whether it will work via connectivity with an iPhone or Android device, or stand-alone, is yet to be seen. While the experience is perfect due to lack of notifications, the web app works great in Safari. There are rumors that a dedicated iPad app is in the works, and will be released soon.

You can share photos, videos and files from your iPad to your contacts on WhatsApp.Tapping the icon will just open the website in Safari, instead of opening it as a full-screen Progressive Web App. You can add an icon for WhatsApp to your iPad home screen by tapping the share button in Safari, and tapping on Add to Home Screen.The list of contacts from your iPhone or Android will be shown in WhatsApp Web, NOT the list of contacts on your iPad.
You will not get any notifications since Safari on iPad does not support them.
